Due to the nature of how compasses work, they must be kept flat and level to respond correctly to the Earth’s natural magnetic field.
Here are our tips to help younger children use a compass:
- Create a stable surface: When outdoors, consider using clipboards or hardcover books to create a flat surface for the children to place the compasses on. This will help the compasses function more accurately.
- Classroom demonstrations: Before taking the compasses outside, have a teacher demonstrate the correct way to hold and use a compass in the classroom. This will help the children become more familiar with the compasses before participating in the outdoor activity.
- It is always best to place compasses on a flat surface before reading, but if these are to be used hand-held, then hold your hand as flat, and as close as you can to your body; this will help to stabilise the compass as much as possible. Keep movements to a minimum and turn yourself and the compass around slowly when orienting.
